Representation of Violence

Manhunt 2

Content: Manhunt is a game in which you play a mentally unstable character haunted by a crazed assassin that is the result of a mind control experiment gone wrong, you kill and murder your way through several levels as a more and more complicated story is revealed.

Structure: Its a level based linear style story in which you are given a task which you must follow and complete before being allowed to progress further.

Target Audience: 18+ the game was first banned from release by Take 2 in the UK, Ireland and several other countries but was given a rated of AO in the USA and released as uncensored product. It was then revised for the Mature rating and after several parts of the game were censored it was allowed for release in the UK and other countries where it had been previously banned.

Issues: The release of Manhunt 2 was met with large levels of controversy as in its first release it contained extremely high levels of graphic killing, an uses a system in which it encourages the player to try and kill enemies and the most violent and over the top ways possible ranking them over the speed and amount of violence that they employed over the level.

Representation Of Women in Video Games

The Representation Of Princess Peach in Super Mario

Content/Stucture:
Super Mario Bro's is a platform video game developed by Nintendo. The player takes on different character roles and the main objective of the game is to race through Mushroom, survive the main antagonist's forces and save the Princess. The player moves through the levels collection coins along the way in order to get to the flagpole at the end of the level. As well as the coins, there are also special bricks marked with a (?) which when hit, may reveal more coins or another special item. Players are given a certain amount of lives which are lost when the character takes too much damage. Additional lives can also be gained by collecting several items on 100 coins.
The game consists of 8 worlds with four sub levels called "stages" The final stage of each world takes part in a castle where the characters are fought in order to save the princess.

Target Audience:

The BBFC for Super Mario is U suggesting that there is no violence or agressive behaviour throughout the game. This shows that the game is aimed at children.

Issues That Might Surround The Game:
Appearance: The way that Princess Peach appears represents the woman character as the stereotypical pink girly girl. This stereotype helps portray her feminine personality. However this contrasts with the game as it is much more action themed. Peach's girlish nature and role as the damsel are represented with her heart abilities and her stubborn, yet cute appearance.

Representation of violence/women.

Picture 8

All of the women in Grand Theft Auto are represented as sluts. They wear short skirts etc. and talk stupidly and say stupid comments. Most of the women are seen as; gold diggers, prostitutes, stupid and are treated are perceived as sex objects.

Violence is also a common theme in Grand Theft Auto. You can have a range of weapons from knifes, to guns, to rockets etc. You can beat up/attack anyone, including police and tramps.

The target audience is teenagers, despite the PEGI rating being 18. It has a high rating because of common themes of sex, drugs and violence. It is targeted to teenagers because it is sensationalist and glorifies sex, drugs and violence.

Issues surrounding the game, as an example, would be an incident that occurred in Thailand. A teenage boy went on a Grand Theft Auto style rampage, killing people and stealing cars and blamed his actions on the game when questioned by the police and court. He thought the actions were acceptable because he had done the crimes on the game and gotten away with it. [

representation of violence by Holly, Toby and Emily

1. Content/structure
Grand theft auto represents violence in lots of different ways. One of the ways violence is represented in the game is by the various levels and missions that you have to do throughout the game. Missions include killing people, carrying out car chases and sorting out drugs and other illegal trades.

Plot - As a player you become part of a gang and complete missions which allow you to shoot people and drive cars around.

Target Audience/BBFC - The age limit within the series of games would be 18 as it has strong language and violence toward other people including woman and homeless people. The target audience for the series of games would be 18-30 years mainly the men playing it as the woman are not interested with violence and woman.

Issues surrounding the game - The game is influential to people as they may mix it with reality.

representation of women in sims 3

The representation of women is constructed within the sims by showing that women can achieve and fulfill the complete life of any chosen or desired career/life goals. It shows equality to men. Women are represented in a positive way, they can do next to every activity a real women would do in the hands of the person playing the game.

The game has a bbfc age rating of PEGI 12+, it is targeted at this aged audience because it has suggestive themes and moderate/strong action violence. The game is aimed to a target audience of both the male and female gender. It is a role playing game where the person playing can complete tasks/activities of there will. The game is aimed at teenagers because they can relate to the game or imagine how there life will plan out from using the role playing game.

Because the game is peaceful and a role playing game there isn't really any issues within the game related to influential content, the person playing the game is in control over the character so they can only do what the player decides upon. The game contains a lot of activities so the audience could view this and enjoy the activity then go out and perform this activity in real life, all these activities are accepted and encouraged activities in real life.

Representation of Violence in Grand theft auto - Lucy and Laura

Grand theft auto 4
The representation of violence in Grand theft auto is portrayed through the graphics as they are more detailed being 3D making it more realistic. The use of these graphics can create a wide variety of crimes to do such as running down people, killing people and policemen, buying weapons and other acts.

The BBFC has rated it an 18+, the realistic violence and idea of being able to do anything available to the character makes this more suitable to an older audience, however from a source younger children are prone to buy this for the appealing features such as the great graphics.

Grand theft auto is based in a city like New York or London, the concept is to kill as many people as possible in the task/mission allocated using various weapons such as guns, cars, physical actions and many more.  There is no progression of levels to unlock any features or bonus', it is purely a task related game. However you can change citys to make it more exciting and go on to freeplay mode allowing you to do whatever you want. This game is very influential in real life as it gives the impression you can do whatever you like and have no consequences from your actions. This is why this game is rated an 18, as adults understand this is not something to do with real life.

Production
The production of a video game is how the product is made. For example the way in which the producer decided to make the game.

Distribution/Marketing
This is how the game is advertised and how the consumer knows of the game. Advertising techniques include; Guerilla Marketing which is an unconventional system of promotion e.g. shocking, model displays that catch the consumer's attention. Another technique is viral marketing which relies on things such as the television, internet, posters to advertise games. Although Guerilla Marketing is and effective technique that can get the consumers physically involved, Viral Marketing tends to be more popular as it is less expensive, time consuming and simple.

Joe, Tom, Lily - Gears of War 2 Game Review

In this review we are going to be critiquing is a game from the popular Gears of War series/franchise, Gears of War was developed by Epic Games and built upon the companies proprietary Unreal Engine, it is also a third-person shooter action game.

In this review we will cover multiple aspects of the game, for example, Story, Game play and Controls, Graphics and Music etc...

Story:

The Gears of War story line takes place six months after the ending of the first game, (Light-mass Bombing)
following the bombing the locust horde (The antagonists) survived and renewed their war on humanity (The Protagonists.)

The humans are planning an offensive against the locust by sending 'Grind-Lifts' below the surface to attack the locust strongholds only to be met by a locust defensive attack.

and so begins the players' story, as Delta Squad consisting of Marcus, Dom and Carmine are sent into the fray to search the hollow your given control of Marcus.

Game play and Controls:

The player interacts with the game through a standard Xbox 360 Controller, this is because Microsoft has signed contracts with Epic Games for exclusivity on their platform.

Gears of War has a unique play style to those of the same genre, movements are made very realistic, for example restriction of movement while running and collisions.

Overall the game is fun to play, this is partly because it contains an element of skill which some players look for in online capable games, it also has a much improved mechanical aspect with regards to taking or breaking cover including movement and actions. Lastly it allows the player to experience a sense of escapism and experience events not available in other games/real world.

Graphics and Sound:

Overall the graphics and sound are of a very high quality, they are almost unmatched by other games even those of which released after it, one graphical bug we noticed when getting to grips with the game was the extended amount time it took the system to render textures on characters and objects in the game, however this extended time is a small price to pay for the excellent graphics.

Lastly the sound is very high quality and true to life, very gory and visceral.

Conclusion:

Review of Red Dead Redemption

We played Red Dead Redemption. RDR is a one-off game and is not part of a series. RDR is an action/adventure game set around cowboys in the desert. It is a turn-based game as it is set in 1911 as cowboys were a big thing in south-western america. The game is first person as you see from behind the cowboy and control his actions.

In the year 1911, John Marston, a retired outlaw formerly of a gang led by Dutch van der Linde, is taken away from his wife Abigail and his son Jack by government agents. The agents tell Marston that he will be reunited with his family if he hunts down the remaining lead members of his former gang. Left with no choice, Marston travels to the territory of New Austin to capture or kill one of his old friends, Bill Williamson, who now runs his own gang of bandits out of Fort Mercer. Marston confronts Williamson, only to be shot and left for dead outside the fort. A rancher, Bonnie MacFarlane, finds him wounded, and brings him to a doctor to be treated.

In 1911, a retired outlaw that used to be in a gang led by Dutch van der Linde, named John Marston

YES REALITY super mario sunshine video game review

YES REALITY!

The video game is called super mario sunshine and it is manufactured by nintendo. The genre of game is fantasty/adventure. The game is part of a series as there are many other super mario games on all different video game platforms.

There is a set story in the game that must be completed to progress through the game and to go to different points and locations within the game. The story revolves around killing little flowers on your route to cleaning up an island that has been trashed by a culprit, and at the end you come face to face with the culprit and battle him. The games is played on nintendo gamecube and to control the game you use a nintendo gamecube controller. The different controls on the controller take control of the character and enable you to do different things with him. For example, A jumps and X changes weapon.

The game can be played only on nintendo gamecube. The visual quality of the game is not exceptional but this is become it is an old platform and high definition and detailed graphics hadn't been produced when the nintendo gamecube was released. The colours are bright so it is easy to make out everything that is on the screen and it is also nice to look at and doesn't hurt your eyes.

There is music in the background that is simple and flows with the feel of the game. There is also digetic sound that ties in with the actions that you are making your character do, for example when you take off on your jetpack you can hear the sound of the water pressure coming out of the bottom of it. There is no surround sound because it is no necessary on a game of this nature, and surround sound wasn't developed when the nintendo gamecube was produced.

The game is enjoyable to play, although sometimes it seems a little bit confusing as ther story isn't always completely obvious what you have to do and where you have to go in order to achieve success on the mission but once you know what your doing, it is addictive and makes you want to keep playing. Once you have know what you have to do and where you have to go, the rest of the story follows on from and it and makes more sense as you get deeper and deeper into the story. The controls are easy to grasp, although sometimes the camera angle goes into positions where you can't actually see your character and it makes it very hard to control it and know what to do. There is an analog stick that controls the camera angle, but it feels like as a player, you shouldn't have to adjust the angle to be able to see your character it should be adjusted already by the game itself.

Time Splitters 2

Time splitters is a first person shooter, with an extended multi player feature. The genre is action and the purpose of the game is to eliminate opponents in different locations. The narrative was unclear to us in playing multiplayer although we do believe there is a specific narrative for a story mode. The gameplay is fast and frantic although a little bit dated, specifically through the controls and platform it was based on. (gamecube) We feel this game has limited multiplayer fun however we dont believe the simngle player story mode be emercing. Due to its dated narrative and poor controls, further ways in which we feel the game is dated is through the poor graphics (although good for the time) and the monotonic drone of accompanying backing track and sound.

Tomb Raider Review

Genre
The genre for this video game is action/adventure, it was published by Crystal Dynamics and it was then developed by Eidos.

Story
In a race against time, Lara must travel across the globe to unearth history's greatest weapon. A legendary artifact of such immense power it could threaten humanities very existence. She finds herself having to complete missions throughout this game with mini occurrences along the way.
Gameplay and Controls
In this game Lara travels around places on a mission to kill animals, people and monsters that occur during her journey. She uses a variety of guns and uses her strength to help her overcome all her missions. A lot of environments are used and a variety of puzzles are created to keep the audience entertained.

Hints are given throughout the game, which are helpful for when you find yourself in tricky situations. They are there to explain the buttons of the controller and tell you what you need to do in order to get past the situations.

Graphics
Baring in mind the time that this game was released, the graphics of the game are fairly good. The picture can sometimes appear a bit blurry within some of the movements but the overall l this doesn't affect the quality of the game too much. The movements for the animated characters was good and there was a good variety of different movements and skills to try. Sometimes the movements seemed a little slow and delayed, however we put this down to, again, the time period in which this game was produced.
